Staying Connected on the Soccer Field and the Chess Board

Team sports are at their most beautiful when choreography among individuals creates a sum greater than its parts. In basketball, the best examples are the 1986 Boston Celtics, while the best model for football has been the Tom Brady-led offenses of the New England Patriots.

This seemingly effortless choreography doesn't happen without underlying connections, though. Or more specifically, connections in space and connections in movements. Take, for example, this analytic video of FC Barcelona:

The connections in space and in movement among Barca's players represent the geometry that exists below the surface of Barcelona's choreography.

Likewise, this screenshot from the sixth game of the 1972 world chess championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky demonstrates how connectivity plays a similar role on the chess board:

As the red arrows indicate, fifteen of white's (Fischer) sixteen pieces are connected to at least one other piece within the first seven moves (only the pawn boxed in yellow on b2 is unprotected), and Fischer maintains connectivity when he continues his attack over the remaining thirty moves.

Two Quick Thoughts On Barcelona vs. Eibar

The Rosevelt Soccer club will be hosting its first soccer-viewing party of the 2016-2017 season this Sunday (1/22) at 2:30p. Here are a couple quick thoughts about the matchup between FC Barcelona and SD Eibar:
  • Imagine if Messi, Neymar, and Barcelona were playing in South Portland this weekend.
Sounds implausible, right? I mean, we would never expect some of the world's biggest stars playing for one of the world's most renowned soccer clubs to make a trip to such a small locale. Well, that's pretty much the equivalent of Barcelona playing Sociedad Deportivo (SD) Eibar in this weekend's La Liga game.

To wit: The population of Eibar, Spain is a little more than 27,000, while the population of South Portland is about 25,500.

Further, Eibar plays in the Ipurua Municipal Stadium, which has a capacity of 6,300. That's the same exact capacity of Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium.

This unlikely asymmetry--such a big club playing in such a small city--is made possible by promotion and relegation, a system of competition that allows clubs of all sizes to move up and down among Spain's nine divisions of professional soccer based on teams' annual performance on the field.

SD Eibar, for example, finished first in the second-highest domestic league in Spain in 2014, so they've been competing in the highest level of competition for the last three seasons. And one of the perks of having the opportunity to be promoted--an opportunity that does not currently exist for clubs in U.S. soccer--is the ability to host the world's best players, regardless of the size of a club's city, stadium, or bank account.

Here's a good, 14-minute video on the SD Eibar phenomenon:

  • Barcelona is still the best club to model.
SD Eibar's rise to the top tier of Spanish soccer is remarkable. But Barcelona's performance on the soccer field should still be the focus of our players when they watch Sunday's game. To help them learn while being entertained, we'll be providing our players with bingo cards that will encourage them to watch for the same skills and habits we encourage our own players to display on the soccer field.

Here's a sample of a card:

Soccer Positions as Chess Pieces

In his 2012 book Football and Chess: Tactics, Strategy, BeautyAdam Wells stitches together a 176-page analogy between the games of chess and soccer.

He examines many similarities both games share, including the overlap that exists between particular chess pieces on the board and particular positions on the field. Below are five of those connections, with highlight videos used to demonstrate the analogies.

Goalkeeper as King: Manuel Neuer

The intent of chess is to attack your opponent's king, while protecting your own king. The same dynamic translates directly to soccer: The intent is to attack your opponent's goalkeeper, while protecting your own goalkeeper.

The analogy between the king in chess and the goalkeeper in soccer can be taken a step further. Both the king and the goalkeeper primarily play defensive roles, but they also have opportunities to be utilized in the attack despite their limited range.

No goalkeeper represents those dual roles better than German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. He is not only credited with being among the best shot-stoppers in the world, but he is also recognized as being one of the best goalkeepers when it comes to his contributions to his teams' attack. Whether it's his ability to act as a release valve by receiving and playing out of the back with his feet or his ability to spark a quick counter-attack with a long throw, Neuer's capacity to be involved when his team possesses the ball should be emulated by our club's goalkeepers.
